Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

Comments Off on Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has called for a banking hub to be established in Ashby to serve people in Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens.

Cllr Rob Waltham has written to LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, asking for a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

Ashby Central and Ashby Lakeside alone have a combined population of more than 16,000, with the wider catchment taking the potential population served to well over 30,000.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Ashby is a major centre serving a large and growing population, but residents and businesses no longer have access to a bank branch there.

“A banking hub would support residents, help local businesses manage cash and strengthen an already important shopping and service centre.”

The council has told LINK it is willing to provide further evidence on population, retail activity, transport links and potential locations for a hub.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member community wellbeing urban (Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe) said: “We have already seen in Brigg and Barton how banking hubs can provide a practical solution when communities lose traditional bank branches.

“Ashby now deserves the same consideration. It has the population, the retail centre and the wider catchment to make a strong case for a hub of its own.”

The council already provides free parking in Ashby, making it easier for residents to access local shops and services, with hundreds of thousands of free two-hour parking sessions used each year.

Cllr Waltham added: “We have made a commitment to back independent retailers and local centres across North Lincolnshire. Free parking is part of that, and attracting services such as banking hubs is another important part of keeping places like Ashby thriving.

“We want people to be able to shop locally, use local services and support local businesses without having to travel elsewhere for essential services.”

Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

Comments Off on Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

People across Ashby and surrounding communities are being urged to back the campaign for a new banking hub.

The council has already asked LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, to carry out a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

A hub could serve people across Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens – a potential catchment of more than 30,000 people.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We believe there is a really strong case for a banking hub in Ashby and now we want residents and businesses to help us demonstrate the level of local support.

“It takes less than a minute to add your name. The more people who back the campaign, the stronger the message we can send that people want convenient access to banking services in this part of North Lincolnshire.

“We have already seen the difference banking hubs can make in Brigg and Barton. Ashby has a large population, a busy retail centre and a wide catchment, and we want LINK to give that case serious consideration.”

Cllr Andrea Davison, ward member for Ashby, said: “We used to have banks on Ashby High Street and the problems we saw when the Post Office temporarily closed showed just how important local access to these services still is.

“Not everybody banks online and people need somewhere they can go face to face. A banking hub would make a massive difference for local residents, shoppers and businesses.”

There is currently no bank branch in Ashby. The council has argued that the area meets a number of the factors LINK considers when assessing the need for additional banking services, including population, retail activity, public transport and journey times to alternative provision.

For residents reliant on public transport, access to the remaining banking facilities in Scunthorpe town centre is already well beyond LINK’s 15-minute benchmark. A scheduled bus journey from Bottesford to Scunthorpe Bus Station, for example, takes around 25 minutes, before waiting time and the onward journey to a bank branch are taken into account.

Brigg’s banking hub has already had 4,877 residents visit this month already and transacted almost £1m since opening.

Residents and businesses can back the campaign here.

Burringham Bypass moves forward – plans submitted for Scunthorpe’s southern motorway link

Comments Off on Burringham Bypass moves forward – plans submitted for Scunthorpe’s southern motorway link

Plans to finally connect Scunthorpe’s southern motorway junction to the rest of the town have now been submitted – marking a major step towards delivering the long-awaited link.

The proposed road will connect the M181 roundabout directly to Burringham Road, turning what has long been seen as a standalone junction into a working southern gateway.

If approved, drivers in Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham will benefit from a faster, more direct route to the motorway – easing pressure on Berkeley Circle and improving traffic flow across the town.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a big step forward – we know residents have been asking for years where that roundabout leads and now we know. This is how this will be turned into a proper route.

“We’ve done the groundwork and secured the funding – now it’s right that the plans go through the proper planning process. This will be considered independently, as it should be, but what we’ve done is make sure everything is in place to deliver it.

The scheme will be delivered by Keepmoat and is funded through the Local Regeneration Fund, with funding confirmed as part of the council’s approved budget.

This latest milestone follows continued investment in the local road network, focused on keeping traffic moving and supporting growth across North Lincolnshire.

Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader and cabinet member for highways, said: “This is the step that gets it moving.

“Once approved, this link will make a real difference – giving communities a direct route to the motorway and taking pressure off Berkeley Circle.

“It’s a practical improvement residents will feel every day.”

Comments Off on “Leave it better than you found it”: Cllr Neil Poole on public life, optimism and community – talks to the News Direct Podcast

Councillor Neil Poole is the latest guest on News Direct, the podcast, sharing a deeply personal story rooted in North Lincolnshire and shaped by community, service and optimism.

Born at home on Moor Road in Yaddlethorpe, raised around Bottesford and Messingham, Neil reflects on a childhood defined by independence, hard work and strong local ties.

From walking to school at five to serving an agricultural apprenticeship that took him from the workshop floor to export sales across Europe, Neil’s early working life laid the foundations for a career built on graft and people skills.

Pod host Cllr Rob Watham, said: “Neil’s story is a reminder that the best public servants are the ones who never lose touch with where they come from. His optimism, rootedness and genuine care for people comes through in everything he does – and that’s exactly why this conversation matters.”

News Direct, the podcast features conversations with people who live, work and lead in North Lincolnshire, sharing real stories about their lives, experiences and the communities. The series explores personal journeys, local history and the motivations behind public and civic life, offering listeners an insight into the people shaping the area beyond job titles and headlines.

The conversation traces Neil’s move into public life – joining Messingham Parish Council in 1999, becoming chair within three years, and being elected to North Lincolnshire Council in 2007.

Now one of the council’s longest-serving figures, Neil speaks candidly about what keeps him motivated: helping people navigate challenges, keeping the “human touch” in local government, and leaving places better than he found them.

Neil also reflects on optimism in the face of serious illness, the importance of community spaces and sports clubs, and why North Lincolnshire’s mix of industry and countryside remains something to be proud of.

The podcast is available on YouTube and Spotify.
